Campus Project Information Green building projects at Berkeley work to reduce building impacts on human health and the environment through the management of energy, water and materials resources during design, construction, operation and maintenance. Sustainable development is very important to the UC Berkeley community and the campus strives to design projects which demonstrate earth-friendly traits. Here are several examples that highlight Facilities Services' green building practices. LEED Certified Projects Berkeley Law Addition: LEED Certified Gold [New Construction v2.2] A 3-story, 55,000 square foot infill project. Skylights enable sunlight to naturally light the lower levels. Other sustainability measures included thermal and lighting controls; use of low-VOC and recycled materials; and stormwater runoff managed with increased site infiltration and storage.
Berkeley Law Renovation: LEED Certified Silver [Commercial Interiors 2.0] The project upgraded and modernized facilities of the Berkeley Law complex. It included interior upgrades and renovations to classrooms and offices; the addition of a new moot courtroom; and the creation of a new Student Center that includes an exterior terrace.
Blum Hall/Naval Architecture: LEED Certified Silver [New Construction 2.2] Blum Hall now combines a restored Naval Architecture Building with an all-new wing in neo-Craftsman style to provide 22,000 square feet of space.
Clark Kerr Renewal Phase I & II: LEED Certified GOLD [Commericial Interiors 2.0] The project upgraded and modernized this historic residential campus. It included interior renovations, improved disabled access, upgraded utilities and renewed landscape, all the while maintaining the historic character of the buildings and the site.
Durant Hall Renovation: LEED Certified Silver [New Construction 2.2] The beautifully executed project demonstrates that building renovation can preserve the historic landmark’s architectural legacy and also reflect the campus commitment to resource conservation, accessibility, and green building practices.
Haste St. Child Development Center: LEED Certified Silver [New Construction 2.1] This facility provides daycare for 74 children and houses an early childhood development research center. Integrated design collaboration has produced a healthful environment that nurtures young occupants with a reduced ecological impact.
Li Ka Shing Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences: LEED Certified GOLD [New Construction v2.2] A new 5-story structure that provides teaching and research space to foster collaborative research in the health and biological sciences. The facility includes a green roof; reclaimed-wood paneling; and low-emitting office carpeting and rubber lab floors.
Morgan Hall Laboratory Renovation: LEED Certified Gold [Commercial Interiors 2.0] This is the first lab renovation on campus to receive this environmentally-friendly distinction, and demonstrates to the campus community that green laboratory design is achievable without sacrifice to scope, schedule or budget.
University Village Redevelopment: LEED Certified [New Construction 2.1] Townhouse residences for student families make up University Village, Albany. Units are located around courtyards with an open space greenway connecting the playground with the community gardens on the western edge of the property.
