LANDSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS & RENEWAL
For over 10 years, the glade was the location for construction trailers and equipment. When the staging was no longer needed, an opportunity was created for site restoration with a sustainable vision. In partnership with the local water utility, East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) and campus Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) a restoration project was developed that also reduced water used for irrigation, enhanced stormwater management. It also improved disabled access, lighting, pedestrian safety and vehicle circulation and restored long-lost historic elements and greenery.
Project sustainability features:
- Weather sensitive irrigation control system that conserves water
- Systems to compare underground turf irrigation with overhead spray
- A storm water detention basin to slow runoff into Strawberry Creek
- Diversion of storm water from the Dwinelle Parking Lot drain to filter through the turf instead of directly into Strawberry Creek
- New young oaks, plane trees and lawn
- Re-established historic brick gutters
- New traffic controls that limit delivery trucks to loading dock areas
- New pathway lights
- Removal of barriers to dsabled access
- Restores historic flagstone pathway and extension to meet Campanile Way
- Signs provide educational information about the project and demonstrate water conservation practices it put in place
